FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -Hamburger SV striker Paolo Guerrero has been banned for eight matches for a tackle from behind during a Bundesliga match.
The German federation imposed the ban Tuesday for the Peru international's violent challenge on Stuttgart goalkeeper Sven Ulreich during a 4-0 loss on Saturday.
Guerrero was given a straight red card for the tackle in the 54th minute.
Hamburg has 24 hours to appeal. The club has said such a long punishment would be too severe when compared to similar fouls and subsequent bans in recent months. Guerrero will be available again for the last two matches of the season.
