Major-league baseball news and notes, July 18

The Royals have designated struggling starter Jonathan Sanchez for assignment, announcing the move before Tuesday night's game against the Mariners.

Sanchez was 1-6 with a 7.76 ERA in 12 starts, winning his Royals debut before things went downhill. The left-hander, who threw a no-hitter for the Giants in July 2009, gave up seven runs in 1 1/3 innings in Monday night's loss to the Mariners. When Sanchez was pulled, he was booed unmercifully by the home crowd.

In what is looking like one of the worst trades in team history, Sanchez and minor-leaguer Ryan Verdugo were acquired from the Giants in November for outfielder Melky Cabrera, who is hitting .353 and was named MVP of last week's All-Star Game in Kansas City.

The Royals recalled Verdugo from Triple-A to make his major-league debut on Tuesday night, but he allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss against Seattle.

"You want them all to work out, but most of the time they don't, unfortunately ..." Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "You certainly analyze it, but don't beat yourself about it because this game moves on. You can't dwell on it. ... You've got to move forward."

The Royals also recalled former A's right-hander Vin Mazzaro.

Bautista to DL: Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista, among the major-league home run leaders with 27, landed on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist he strained while batting in Monday's game. But an MRI Tuesday revealed no structural damage and he hopes to miss minimal time.
