ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greek lawmakers on Thursday debated emergency legislation to approve a massive bond swap that would wipe euro107 billion ($142 billion) off the country's privately-held debt, as new projections showed the economy will suffer the worst contraction in Europe this year.

Parliament will vote in the evening on the proposed deal, which has already been approved at committee level. The governing coalition controls a strong enough majority to easily pass the law.

The writedown to be imposed on banks, pension funds and other private holders of Greek government bonds was agreed this week by finance ministers from the 17-member eurozone.

The meeting in Brussels also approved a new euro130 billion ($172 billion) bailout to prevent Greece from going bankrupt and keep the country within the euro area.

Greece has been surviving since May 2010 on a first batch of international rescue loans as it became unable to finance its huge debt load.

But more than two years of harsh austerity implemented to secure the rescue funds have left the economy in freefall, with businesses closing in the tens of thousands and unemployment at a record high 21 percent in November.

In its latest projections Thursday, the European Commission forecast a 0.3 percent contraction in the eurozone economy this year, with Greece leading the way down with a massive 4.4 percent decline. That would be the fifth straight year of recession in Greece.

The debt relief deal will force private bondholders to exchange their devalued Greek government bonds with new ones with a 53.5 percent lower face value, longer maturities and lower interest rates ? an average 3.6 percent, compared to the previous 4.85 percent.

"This law has to be voted one day before it comes into effect and the (bond swap) is officially announced," Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos told lawmakers.

Once the public offer is made, bondholders will be given 10 days to respond whether they will take part in the exchange. The bill being debated includes collective action clauses that, if activated, will allow a majority of bondholders favoring the swap to impose their decision on holdouts.

"If we do not implement that legislation, every speculator will be able to keep out of the process in the expectation of being paid in full," Venizelos said Wednesday.

Venizelos wants the deal to be completed by March 12, two days before a batch of bonds worth more than euro14 billion starts to mature.

Parliament is also due to vote next week on further harsh austerity measures in 2012 worth euro3.2 billion ($4.2 billion). These will include reductions to already depleted pensions, and deep cuts in health, education and defense spending.

State hospital doctors went on a 24-hour strike Thursday, and several hundred doctors and health workers held a peaceful protest march to Parliament in central Athens.

The DVD is a guide for people facing a malignant brain cancer diagnosis. It features interviews with those who have experience with the disease including patients, health professionals and the country?s top experts.

?Being told ?you have brain cancer? is incredibly upsetting because unlike many cancers, we don?t really know what causes it. Faced with such daunting survival rates, many patients struggle to digest their diagnosis and are unsure of where to turn to for support,? said Gill Batt, Director of Cancer Council NSW?s Cancer Information and Support Services

Suzanne O'Malley: Quitting Smoking Harder for Poor -- American Heart Month: Day 18

"Quitting smoking is the single most important step smokers can take to improve their health," according to Dr. Norman Edelman, chief medical officer of the American Lung Association. Quitting is also significantly more difficult for the poor than for their better-off brethren, researchers reported in the March 2012 issue of the Journal of the American Public Health Association.

Tobacco use is a leading contributor to socioeconomic health disparities in the United States. Cardiovascular disease is the nation's number one killer of both men and women.

Americans with household incomes of $15,000 or less smoke at nearly 3 times the rate of those with incomes of $50,000 or more, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

More than 2,700 smokers were given nicotine patches and cognitive-behavioral therapy which is based on changing behavior through changing thinking patterns. The researchers assessed participants' progress in quitting smoking at three and six months after the treatment period.

The number of attempts to stop were the same regardless of socioeconomic status, but wealthier people succeeded more often than poorer people, and that disparity in success seems to be widening.

The investigators, led by Christine E. Sheffer, PhD, City College of New York, found that compared to people with the lowest socioeconomic status, those with the highest socioeconomic status were 55 percent more likely to have quit smoking after three months, and 2.5 times more likely after six months. The term socioeconomic status takes into account factors such as income, occupation, education, and where a person lives.

Researchers found that community-based tobacco dependence treatment programs can reduce the effects of socioeconomic gulfs by providing all smokers with needed assistance, but this assistance doesn't impact poverty-related factors--like stress, coping resources, psychological issues, exposure to other smokers, and use of treatment resources. Ultimately, the poorer the smoker, the poorer the treatment outcomes.

Twisted Metal is not a game that should be played solo. If you are planning on getting it just to play through a fun single player campaign with no desire to play online or with friends, you will be sorely disappointed. If you do have a bunch of friends who want to play the game with you and you have an online connection, Twisted Metal is great. You can play the campaign the whole way through with a friend, you can engage in same console deathmatches with four people, and you can take the game online to destroy people around the world.

Since I didn?t want to jump straight into the online portion and get completely obliterated, I decided to?play through?the campaign first to see what the game had to offer. Well, as you start off the campaign you?play as Sweet Tooth, who enters Twisted Metal so he can find out the location of the one who got away. In a fully live action, fully green screen supported story, Sweet Tooth chases after?a woman he tried to kill many years ago but?loses track of her. So he enters Twisted Metal?so that?Calypso will tell him where she has been hiding all these years. You start the game in a small town, where mayhem ensues, all while listening to a really well done soundtrack featuring some great rock and metal songs.

The first thing I noticed about the?game is how weird the controls seemed. I skipped past the tutorial, expecting some in game?help, but there wasn?t any. So, I jumped into the game and quickly learned that?square is gas and you double tap it in order to boost. As for braking, that?s circle, then double tap for reverse. It takes a while to get used to, but before long you?ll have the controls mastered and be pulling off insane kills where you boost towards an enemy while?firing rockets, getting close enough to switch to the shotgun, power sliding around with X, then blasting them some more until they die. Honestly, after the initial awkwardness, I found the controls perfectly fit the game.

In terms of gameplay and overall fun factor,?this is where the game truly shines. That first mission is just a straight up death match, meaning that all you have to do is kill everyone else. Eat Sleep?Play did an amazing job?to make the game enjoyable and ?arcadey,? while not going completely over the top. You?ll blast away your enemies all while collecting power ups that deal extra damage, dodging incoming projectiles, and plowing through traffic and pedestrians in similar fashion to that seen in?Burnout Revenge.?If you do?happen to find yourself in trouble, boost over a mountain and then drive?through a health truck or into a garage to switch your vehicle.

Now, once you beat that first mission, you will progress even further into Sweet Tooth?s campaign and play great game types such as The Cage, a Twisted Metal twist on King of the Hill, and Juggernaut, where you have a giant truck that you have to blow up before it respawns more enemies. To?end Sweet Tooth?s section,?there is a really fun boss fight where you have to destroy two Monster Trucks, helmed by The Brothers Grimm. Upon defeating them, you are taken to the second character of the three character campaign, Mr. Grimm, and the campaign continues its good pace by including 2 Juggernauts, or having you race to detonate a bomb. Even the giant final boss of Mr. Grimm?s storyline was fun, but then we?get into Dollface?s campaign, which really takes the campaign from a high note, to a very low note.

It starts out just fine, you play through even tougher versions of previous missions, but once you reach the final two, it just becomes a frustrating mess. There is a?Checkpoint race that forces you to hit about 50 checkpoints before you can race to detonate a bomb. This would be just fine, but those checkpoints will be at the top of buildings and just the slightest mistake will send you plummeting to the ground, putting you so far behind that you have to restart. It actually took about 20 tries for me to beat it, just because I would get hit off a ledge just before I was about to make a jump, or it would be too difficult to see where the next checkpoint was.

After finally?beating the Checkpoint race, the?last mission takes you to?Sweet Tooth?s Carnival of Carnage. It is a multi-stage boss fight that has you blowing up a Sweet Tooth head, playing pinball and?racing up a treacherous?slope. Sadly, it ends with a very glitchy, frustrating helicopter segment. This portion has you fighting a Sweet Tooth machine with a hole in his head. Obviously, you have to drop a bomb into the hole but to do this you have to kill one of the Sweet Tooth Minions flying around. So, you spend 30 seconds shooting the minion down, then you?fly downwards?to the ground, activate the magnet (which takes perfect aim), fly back up to the Sweet Tooth head, all?while hoping the game doesn?t arbitrarily drop the bomb on you, and then finally release the bomb into his head. You?ll then need to repeat this about 4 or 5 times, running into many glitches. Ending with this type of boss fight was a real disappointment because the campaign started off so strong and even the story ended in predictable fashion.

Once you finish the campaign, you can head into the online portion of the game, but as of right now, it has some major issues. While the online play is definitely a lot of fun because you can play against unpredictable human opponents, actually getting into a game can be a huge challenge. You see, you can select Quick Online Action from the main menu but you?ll just usually wait a minute, then get a connection error notice. So, I decided I would select my online match from the giant list you can find by going to the online multiplayer section.

Well,?there will be?about 100 games listed and when you go to connect to one, it will give you yet another ?network connection error? notice. Realistically, I found myself trying to get into about 25 games before?one would finally let me join, yet that leads to more problems. Since there is always a host, you have to wait for them to start the game and?matches will not start automatically, so you have to wait for that same host to start the battle, but they are likely to wait until you have a full party, which rarely happens.

If you can find your way into an online match, you will find a mixed bag of online types. The generic Deathmatch, Last Man Standing, and team versions of those are present and fun. On the other hand, you have Hunted, which makes the person who scores the first kill, ?The Hunted? and you must kill him, thus becoming the new Hunted. It was fun at first, but the Hunted usually just runs away and if they have a fast car, you won?t catch up to them.

Lastly, there is Nuke. It is a fun, if imbalanced, game that has you capturing a human so you can send a missile at a teams statue. The imbalancing comes from the fact that the ?away? team has a stationary missile launcher that is easy to fire a missile with, but the ?home? team has a mobile launcher, that can be very tough to track down. Nearly every single game of Nuke that I played had the away team winning by quite a large margin, due to the launcher being in one place. Don?t get me wrong, Nuke was fun, it was just unfair at times.

'Colbert Report' abruptly suspends production

The Colbert Report unexpectedly halts production for two days, musician Seal stops wearing his wedding ring and Cindy Crawford puts a stop to her daughter's modeling career, at least for now.

UPDATED: Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" abruptedly suspended production on Wednesday night, citing "unforeseen reasons." In a statement, the network said, "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the show will air repeat episodes on Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 16."

According to the New York Daily News, production staff for the show were told that host Stephen Colbert had a family emergency, which was why he was unable to attending the tapings.

Fans who turned up for Wednesday night's taping -- some of whom were already in their seats in the studio, according to The Hollywood Reporter -- were told they would have to re-apply for tickets for a future taping. Ticket holders for Thursday's taping were alerted by email.

The show was likely return soon, possibly as early as next week, a source close to the show told Reuters.?

The break comes during a crucial stretch for Colbert's show, with the Republican primary season in full swing. Last month, Colbert took his political humor to South Carolina before its primary, staging a mock campaign rally and urging fans to vote for former Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain.

Cold in Eastern Europe kills more than 650

BUCHAREST, Romania?? More than 650 people have died during a record-breaking cold snap in Eastern Europe, authorities said Wednesday, as officials in the Czech Republic blamed two massive car crashes on blinding snow.

Since the end of January, the region has been pummeled by the deep freeze, which has brought the heaviest blizzards in recent memory. Tens of thousands have been trapped in often-freezing homes and villages by walls of snow and unpassable roads, and officials have struggled to reach out to the vulnerable with emergency food airlifts.

Authorities in Russia and Ukraine alone reported Wednesday that more than 300 people have died in the bitter cold.

About 100 damaged cars blocked a major highway in the Czech Republic connecting the capital, Prague, with the eastern part of the country and Slovakia. Seven people were injured in two separate accidents, authorities said, warning it could be hours before the mangled vehicles are cleared.

Some 40 cars crashed before midday Wednesday during a heavy snowstorm 188 miles (300 kilometers) east of Prague, injuring two people. Dozens of vehicles, including a bus, were involved in a separate crash southeast of Prague, which injured five, according to Czech public CT24 television.

Authorities in Russia said 205 people have died this year in the frigid cold, while Ukraine has had 112 cold fatalities and Poland had 107. Seven people have died in Romania in the past 24 hours, bringing the total there to 86 deaths. In Lithuania, there have been 23 deaths. Deaths were also reported in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia.

In hard-hit Romania, some 23,000 people remain isolated in 225 eastern communities where more than one week of heavy snow has blocked roads and wreaked havoc on the rail network. Residents were worried that their houses could collapse under the heavy snow as authorities struggled to bring them food, water, medicine and wood.

A flight instructor flew his homemade powered parachute ? a motorized vehicle that flies at low altitude ? making several 45 minute-trips to deliver bread and canned food to people who have been cut off for days.

A five-month-old girl with severe pneumonia was taken to a hospital early Wednesday by sled and an army vehicle after authorities struggled for six hours to reach her.

Romanian farmers ? faced with up to 15 feet of snow in some areas this week ? are concerned about their sheep, goats, horses and cows. One farmer said he dug his pigs out of the snow and brought them into his home.

Forty-one Senators have come together to petition for action to be taken on the ailing federal program that provides affordable insurance coverage to thousands of homeowners. COMMENTARY | State after state in the Republican nomination shows an incredible amount of apathy among GOP voters. The fractions of registered Republicans showing up are frighteningly small. When compared to Republican candidates and voting patterns in 2008, the trend is even scarier for the GOP. The question is why this is happening, and whether the nominee has any chance to defeat Barack Obama.

The anemic numbers from Iowa and New Hampshire have been noted, as have the huge gap between voters in Florida and Nevada compared to the turnout in 2008. But now to the list of dramatically lower turnout we must add the states that held their primaries on Feb. 7 (Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri) and Saturday (Maine). Only South Carolina has shown any measure of political excitement this primary season.

Myth 1: Everyone Is Staying Home Because They Think Romney Has Wrapped It Up.

That myth was advanced by Ari Fleischer and John Sununu. But turnout was at its highest after the New Hampshire primary, when Romney looked the most dominant. Even when polls showed a tight contest between Romney and Rick Santorum, turnout was almost 50 percent lower than in 2008 in Colorado.

Myth 2: It's The Weather That Is To Blame For The Low Turnouts.

One county in Maine (Washington), "had to cancel" its caucus (as Ron Paul supporters cried foul) due to bad weather, but that affected only 200 voters. Out of the 258,000 registered Republicans in Maine, only about 2 percent showed up Saturday . It's not as though the Midwest and New England states are only holding their elections in the winter this year. What explains Florida's low turnout? You can't hang this one on Mother Nature.

Myth 3: At Least The 2012 Choice Of Candidates Isn't As Bad As 2008
